CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Vincent Reno liked to be called Reaper while on a mission, but these days he began to wonder if maybe he was growing out of his callsign. After all, the call sign ‘Reaper’ had been given to him many years ago – in the original French ‘Le Faucheur’ – back when he had joined the French Foreign Legion. He was still in his twenties. A drill sergeant in the Legion had once told him after a few drinks that a more capable and stronger man he had never met inside the ranks. His stamina had been unsurpassed, as had been his tolerance of hardship and deprivation. He had also excelled in demonstrating absolutely zero reluctance when it came to executing his orders and neutralising the enemy. It was the act of rapidly building up the largest body count of his entire battalion that had earned him his moniker.

The Reaper.

Vincent Reno nearly always thought in French, even when on a mission with his colleagues in ECHO, so he tended to see himself as ‘Le Faucheur’, but ‘Reaper’ was just as good to hear.

Until now.

He had two boys at home in the south of France, Louis and Leo. They lived with their mother Monique, from whom he had separated some time ago. The separation was neither peaceful nor happy. His life in the Foreign Legion and then in ECHO had ended any hope of their ever being happy together, as all Monique ever wanted was a normal family life following a promise from him to take up an ordinary job in the civilian world and retire from the Foreign Legion. When he had reneged on this, the trouble had started. Either way, he increasingly identified less and less as Reaper, having looked back on his life and wondered where all the years had gone. He began to doubt if he had spent them in the right way. When Monique had walked out, he had become Reaper permanently, because everyone he knew used that name and there was no one left in his life who called him Vincent.

Until now.

Scarlet Sloane called him Vincent although she sometimes used Reaper on a mission, but that was only at his insistence. It had become a running joke, but to him it was serious. It was Reaper who did these things, who was sometimes forced to shoot and stab people and set explosives, but never Vincent. Vincent’s conscience was clear, but perhaps now he might let ‘Reaper’ go over time and go back to being the man he was before he joined the Legion.

“Turn left up here.”

Shaken from his daydream, Reaper watched as Cairo turned the steering wheel and took the next left, just as Alex had told her. They had been cruising along 7th Ave, driving south towards their next destination in the meatpacking district, where Alex had told them they would be able to use the southern entrance to the Highline. Alex was navigating on her phone and now looked up and spoke once again to Scarlet.
